Avondale Park, UK
New inclusive playground for all
The council sought proposals for new playground equipment, suitable surfacing, fencing for the senior play area, and new seating. Accessible equipment was a key priority to ensure inclusivity for all children.
For the Junior Playground, catering to children up to 8 years old, the majority of participants chose a nature/wildlife theme for the playground refurbishment. Wood, timber, and natural materials were the most popular choices for the equipment, with a preference for multi-colored designs. The location, size of the area, and existing fencing were to remain unchanged. The five most popular types of equipment included a multi-unit/climbing frame, balancing equipment, swings, a jumper/trampoline, and a slide.
In the Senior Play Area, designed for children up to 14 years old, the play area includes dynamic pieces like the Titan, Viper, Levitator, and Trampoline. Safety surfacing materials consist of wet pour, mulch, grass mats, and loose fill like sand. The play area features Mirage seats on the swing frame and a Spin me Flush Roundabout. These key features introduce elements of excitement and inclusivity, with a thoughtfully designed layout that matches the local surroundings.
Two main bright and colorful play areas are separated for both toddlers and juniors to enjoy. The bespoke-made play unit, especially crafted for Avondale Park, ensures accessibility for all children. This unit boasts numerous play values that add to its flow and lead children to the rest of the park. A cosy cocoon allows children to sit in a safe space, while the Spinmee roundabout accommodates wheelchair users, providing vestibular stimulation.
Local authority insights reflected positive feedback, with Sarah Brion commenting, "It looks good quality, really happy."
